Marie Loma (Kumpost) Johnson February 26, 1920-July 8, 2012 Marie, a longtime residence of Clark County and WWII veteran, passed away at the age of 92 on July 8th. She left this world the way she wanted. After a beautiful day of gardening, she was sitting in one of her favorite spots watching the neighborhood happenings and listening to her favorite radio station (KPOJ) when she simply went to sleep. Marie was born in Lavina, Montana on February 26, 1920 to James & Emma Kumpost. She spent her childhood in and around the Dorchester, Nebraska area. After graduation from Dorchester High School in 1937 Marie helped her father and brother work the family farm. In 1944 Marie enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was stationed at Camp Beale, California. There she met Joseph Johnson, also in the Army Air Corp, and they were married in 1945. They later divorced in the 1950's. After separating from Joseph in 1950, Marie moved, with her children, back to the family farm in Nebraska where they lived until 1957. She then moved the family out west to Vancouver where she remained. Marie worked for the Vancouver Veterans Hospital in the housekeeping departing until she retired in 1980. After retirement Marie hiked with the Forever Young Hikers and went on many trips with Affordable Tours and Vancouver Parks & Recreation. Marie was always a gardener and in the spring her yard would be blooming with a wide variety of flowers. She would begin planning her garden during the winter months, looking forward to spring when her flowers would begin to bloom and she could start gardening again. Along with planting flowers Marie also planted a vegetable garden. She left the farm, but you couldn't take the farmer out of her!!! Marie will be missed greatly by her surviving family: sons—Terry (Nancy), and Gerry; daughter—Sherry Wheatley (Lewis); grandchildren—John, Jenny, & Shelly Johnson, Kerry Ryan, Kelly Ryan, and Lorraine McNeal (Andrew); and 9 great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, James & Emma Kumpost; brother, James; and great grandson, Wylie McNeal.
